Lesson 1 GRE Exam Structure and Score Strategy
The GRE has three main sections: Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning. Analytical Writing asks you to analyze an issue and an argument, while Verbal Reasoning measures reading and vocabulary skills. Quantitative Reasoning tests algebra, arithmetic, geometry, and data analysis.
Each multiple-choice section is scored from 130 to 170 in one-point increments, so your total score ranges from 260 to 340. Analytical Writing is scored separately from 0 to 6 in half-point increments. There is no penalty for wrong answers, so you should never leave a question blank.
The exam may also include an unscored research section or experimental section, plus scheduled breaks. Because the unscored section does not count toward your score, approach every section with equal focus. Your scored Verbal and Quantitative sections are what admissions committees receive.
A strong study plan begins with a diagnostic test to find your baseline. Set a target score based on your programs, schedule weekly practice, and review every mistake. Spend more time on your weaker section while protecting your stronger section with short maintenance drills.
Use official ETS materials first, then add timed practice as test day approaches. Simulate test conditions, including breaks, and track your pace in each section. Adjust your plan weekly so preparation stays efficient and focused.
Score plan: balance Analytical Writing, Verbal, and Quant. Take a diagnostic, then schedule timed sets weekly. Track errors by type and focus the final week on your weakest section without neglecting the others.
Example
Suppose your diagnostic scores are Verbal 150 and Quantitative 158; your total is 308. To reach 320, plan two Verbal practice blocks and one Quantitative block each week, then retest after four weeks to measure progress.
If the retest improves only Verbal, shift one hour from Quantitative maintenance to the remaining Verbal weaknesses while keeping a weekly full-length timed section.
Worked example: If Quant is lowest, do three timed quant sets per week and one verbal set.
Lesson 2 GRE Vocabulary and Text Completion Strategies
GRE vocabulary questions rarely ask for a dictionary definition. Instead, they test whether you understand how words work in context, where clues in the sentence signal meaning and tone. A word that fits grammatically may still fail if it contradicts the logic of the surrounding text.
Text Completion passages are usually one to five sentences with one to three blanks. Each blank has three answer choices, and you must choose the word that best completes the entire meaning. The correct choice usually depends on structural clues such as contrast, cause and effect, or emphasis.
Look for signal words before choosing. Words like although, however, and despite signal contrast; because, therefore, and as a result signal cause and effect; moreover and in addition signal support. The tone of the passage, whether positive or negative, also narrows the options.
Sentence Equivalence questions give one sentence with one blank and six choices. Pick two answers that each complete the sentence and produce equivalent meanings. The two correct answers are often synonyms, but not always; check that each one works independently.
Build vocabulary by learning words in word families and example sentences rather than isolated lists. Review common roots and prefixes to decode unfamiliar words, and practice with timed sets. Focus first on high-frequency GRE words from official practice material.
Clue drill: in Text Completion, find signal words such as however, although, and consequently. Choose words that match the logic and tone; eliminate options that are grammatical but contradict the clue.
Example
In the sentence "The evidence was ____, so the committee rejected the proposal," the result clue points to a negative word. Among the options compelling, inconclusive, and decisive, only inconclusive explains why the proposal was rejected.
Worked example: "Although the plan was ___ , it was still approved" signals contrast, so choose flawed or controversial, not perfect.
Lesson 3 GRE Reading Comprehension Passage Strategy
Reading Comprehension passages cover topics from humanities, social science, and natural science. Questions test main idea, explicit detail, inference, the function of a sentence, and vocabulary in context. Your job is to read actively and locate evidence rather than rely on outside knowledge.
Main idea questions ask what the passage is primarily about. The correct answer summarizes the whole passage, not just one paragraph. Skim the first sentence of each paragraph and the final conclusion, then choose the answer that captures the author's central purpose.
Detail questions point to specific facts, while inference questions ask what must follow from the text. For an inference, choose the answer that is guaranteed by the passage, not merely possible. Vocabulary-in-context questions require you to read the surrounding sentence and identify the meaning signaled by that context.
Strong passage strategy saves time: annotate key claims and transitions, then read the whole passage once at a steady pace. Avoid over-reviewing. Return to the text for each question and use line references to verify your answer before choosing.
Eliminate wrong answers by testing extremes: answers with words like always, never, or only are often too strong. Answers that reverse the author's position, quote a minor detail, or import outside knowledge are traps. The best choice is supported directly by the passage.
Active reading drill: skim first sentences, mark transitions, and identify the author's claim and evidence. For inference questions, choose only what is supported; avoid outside knowledge and extreme wording.
Example
If a passage says "The discovery was important, though its practical use remains unclear," a safe inference is that the discovery has theoretical significance but has not yet been applied. A choice saying the discovery is useless goes too far, because the passage says the practical use is unclear, not absent.
Worked example: If the passage describes a study and its limitations, an inference about limitations is supported; a claim about policy is not.
Lesson 4 GRE Quantitative Algebra and Arithmetic
Quantitative Reasoning has two sections with four question types: Quantitative Comparison, Multiple-choice with one answer, Multiple-choice with one or more answers, and Numeric Entry. The on-screen calculator can help, but most questions reward number sense and careful reading.
Arithmetic questions test operations, fractions, percents, ratios, and number properties. Know the order of operations, divisibility rules, and common conversions among decimals, fractions, and percents. Estimate before calculating so unreasonable answer choices become obvious.
Algebra questions cover equations, inequalities, functions, exponents, and word problems. Define variables clearly, translate phrases into equations, and solve systematically. Check whether the question asks for x or for an expression such as 2x + 5, a common trap.
Numeric Entry questions have no answer choices; you type a number or fraction into a box. Simplify before entering and use the answer format shown, such as an integer, decimal, or fraction. Multiple-answer questions may have several correct choices, so evaluate every option instead of stopping at the first one that works.
Practice by topic and track your error patterns. Set up clean work, use substitution to check, and test edge cases such as zero, negative numbers, and fractions. With consistent drills, common traps become easy to spot under time pressure.
Number sense drill: practice arithmetic, fractions, percentages, ratios, and number properties. For Quantitative Comparison, simplify both sides and test edge cases before choosing a relationship.
Example
For the equation 3x + 4 = 19, subtract 4 from both sides to get 3x = 15, then divide by 3 to find x = 5. For a multiple-answer version, if the question asks which values make x^2 - 5x + 6 = 0, test 2 and 3: both work, so select both.
Worked example: Compare 0.8 and 4/5: both equal the same value, so they are equal.
Lesson 5 GRE Data Interpretation and Geometry
Data Interpretation questions present tables, bar graphs, line graphs, circle graphs, or scatterplots. You must read values, compare quantities, compute percents and averages, and sometimes estimate trends. Always check units, labels, and the scale of each chart before answering.
Read charts systematically: note the title, axis labels, units, and legend, then identify what the question asks. For percent questions, identify the correct base, because using the wrong base is a frequent error. A value that looks correct but uses a different total is still wrong.
Geometry questions test lines, angles, triangles, circles, and rectangular solids. Memorize key formulas such as the area of a triangle, the Pythagorean theorem, and circle circumference and area. Figures are drawn to scale unless marked otherwise, so use them for estimation.
Quantitative Comparison questions show two quantities, Quantity A and Quantity B, and ask which is greater, whether they are equal, or whether the relationship cannot be determined. Test multiple cases, including zero and negatives, before choosing. If the answer changes, select the cannot-be-determined option.
On test day, allocate time by question type, mark the hardest questions, and move on rather than losing the section's rhythm. Use the calculator only when it saves time, check your scratch work, and answer every question since wrong answers are not penalized.
Graph drill: check title, axis labels, units, and legend before reading values. For geometry, use angle sums, parallel lines, triangles, circles, and coordinate formulas, and draw figures when missing.
Example
A circle graph shows that 25% of a budget of $400 is spent on rent. Since 25% is one quarter, rent is $100. In a quantitative comparison of 25% of 400 and 100, the two quantities are equal, so choose the equal relationship option.
Worked example: A circle graph showing 25% for housing means 90 degrees of the circle.
