Lesson 1 HSK 2 Core Vocabulary Basics

HSK 2 builds directly on the words you use every day: people, actions, objects, times, and places. Start with high-frequency vocabulary from greetings, routines, and simple questions instead of memorizing random lists.

Character recognition is the first skill to train. Learn to recognize a character before you worry about writing it, and always pair the shape with sound and meaning: 看 kàn to look, 见 jiàn to see, 书 shū book.

Pinyin review keeps your pronunciation accurate. Tones are part of the word, not decoration: 买 mǎi to buy and 卖 mài to sell differ only by tone, and 四 sì four sounds very different from 十 shí ten.

Numbers and time words come up in nearly every conversation. Practice 二 èr and 两 liǎng before measure words, then build times with 点 diǎn o'clock and 分 fēn minute: 今天 jīntiān today, 明天 míngtiān tomorrow, 昨天 zuótiān yesterday.

Learn in word families so new words reinforce old ones. Group 早上 zǎoshang morning, 中午 zhōngwǔ noon, and 晚上 wǎnshang evening, or 家 jiā home with 家人 jiārén family members and 回家 huí jiā to go home.

Make review part of your routine: test recognition first, say each word aloud with its tone, and keep each study set small enough to finish in a few minutes.

Recognition drill: learn to recognize characters before writing them. Connect shape, pinyin, and meaning: 看 kàn (look), 听 tīng (listen), 说 shuō (speak). Use topic groups and spaced repetition.

Example

Work through a word family: 早上 zǎoshang morning, 中午 zhōngwǔ noon, 晚上 wǎnshang evening. Say each word aloud, then check that you recognize all three characters.

Now use them in a sentence: 明天早上八点。 Míngtiān zǎoshang bā diǎn. Tomorrow morning at eight.

Worked example: 看 kàn (look), 看见 kànjiàn (see), 好看 hǎokàn (good-looking) form one family.

Lesson 2 Daily Life Places Food and Objects

Daily-life words work best in scenes. Learn places with the actions you perform there: 去学校 qù xuéxiào go to school, 去商店 qù shāngdiàn go to the shop, 去医院 qù yīyuàn go to the hospital, 去银行 qù yínháng go to the bank, 去车站 qù chēzhàn go to the station.

Food and drink are core HSK 2 topics. Recognize the characters for 米饭 mǐfàn rice, 面条 miàntiáo noodles, 茶 chá tea, 咖啡 kāfēi coffee, and 水果 shuǐguǒ fruit, then combine them with verbs like 吃 chī eat and 喝 hē drink.

Common objects let you talk about your world: 手机 shǒujī phone, 电脑 diànnǎo computer, 书 shū book, 桌子 zhuōzi table. Use measure words early: 一本书 yì běn shū one book, 一个手机 yí ge shǒujī one phone.

Shopping phrases turn objects into conversations. Learn 多少钱 duōshǎo qián how much, 贵 guì expensive, 便宜 piányi cheap, 买 mǎi to buy, and 卖 mài to sell.

Transport phrases connect places: 坐车 zuò chē ride or take a vehicle, 走路 zǒulù walk, 等车 děng chē wait for a vehicle, and 回家 huí jiā go home.

Build mini scenes to combine the categories: at the shop, order food, then go home by bus. Each scene gives you a natural sentence frame for the vocabulary.

Scene drill: learn places with actions: 去学校 (go to school), 去商店 (go to the shop), 去医院 (go to the hospital), 去银行 (go to the bank). Add food and objects in the same scenes.

Example

Scene: at the shop. 这个手机多少钱? Zhège shǒujī duōshǎo qián? How much is this phone? 很贵。 Hěn guì. It is very expensive. 那本书便宜。 Nà běn shū piányi. That book is cheap.

Transport line: 我坐车去车站。 Wǒ zuò chē qù chēzhàn. I go to the station by bus.

Worked example: 我去商店买水果 (I go to the shop to buy fruit).

Lesson 3 Family Education and Description Words

Family vocabulary teaches you a useful HSK 2 pattern: repeated syllables often become neutral. Practice 爸爸 bàba dad, 妈妈 māma mom, 哥哥 gēge older brother, 姐姐 jiějie older sister, and 孩子 háizi child.

School and study words carry you through the education topic: 老师 lǎoshī teacher, 学生 xuésheng student, 学习 xuéxí to study, and 考试 kǎoshì exam. Try the simple sentence 老师很忙。 Lǎoshī hěn máng. The teacher is busy.

Adjectives make descriptions concrete: 大 dà big, 小 xiǎo small, 好 hǎo good, 忙 máng busy, 高 gāo tall or high, and 长 cháng long. In statements, put 很 hěn before most adjectives to make the sentence sound natural.

Adverbs add information about how often or how much: 都 dōu all, 也 yě also, 还 hái still or also, 常常 chángcháng often, and 一起 yìqǐ together. They come before the verb: 我们都学习。 Wǒmen dōu xuéxí. We all study.

Combine family, school, and description to make longer sentences: 我哥哥很高。 Wǒ gēge hěn gāo. My older brother is tall. 姐姐常常学习。 Jiějie chángcháng xuéxí. My older sister often studies.

Describe your own family, school day, and habits to activate these words. The more you reuse adjectives and adverbs in true sentences, the faster they become automatic.

Neutral tone drill: repeated syllables often use a neutral tone: 爸爸 bàba, 妈妈 māma, 哥哥 gēge, 姐姐 jiějie. Learn school words 老师, 学生, 学习, and description words 大, 小, 新, 旧 together.

Example

Describe a family scene: 爸爸很高,妈妈很忙,哥哥姐姐都学习。 Bàba hěn gāo, māma hěn máng, gēge jiějie dōu xuéxí. Dad is tall, Mom is busy, and my older brother and sister both study.

Add an adverb: 我们常常一起看书。 Wǒmen chángcháng yìqǐ kàn shū. We often read books together.

Worked example: 姐姐 jiějie is a neutral-tone reduplicated word; 孩子 háizi also ends in a light tone.

Lesson 4 Verbs Particles and Sentence Structure

Verbs carry the action in Chinese sentences. Master the core set first: 吃 chī eat, 喝 hē drink, 去 qù go, 来 lái come, 买 mǎi buy, 看 kàn look or watch, 听 tīng listen, 说 shuō speak, 写 xiě write, and 学 xué learn.

The simplest sentence pattern is Subject + Verb + Object: 我吃米饭。 Wǒ chī mǐfàn. I eat rice. Learn the pattern first, then swap in new nouns and verbs.

Particles change how an action relates to time. 了 le marks a completed action: 我买了手机。 Wǒ mǎi le shǒujī. I bought a phone. 过 guo marks experience: 我看过那本书。 Wǒ kàn guo nà běn shū. I have read that book. 着 zhe marks an ongoing state: 门开着。 Mén kāi zhe. The door is open.

The structural particles 的 de and 得 de do different jobs. 的 de links nouns to their modifiers: 我的手机 wǒ de shǒujī my phone. 得 de links a verb to a description: 他说得很快。 Tā shuō de hěn kuài. He speaks very fast.

Prepositions and conjunctions connect ideas: 在 zài at or in, 从 cóng from, 和 hé and, and the pair 因为...所以... yīnwèi... suǒyǐ... because... so...: 因为下雨,所以我回家。 Yīnwèi xià yǔ, suǒyǐ wǒ huí jiā. Because it is raining, I go home.

Pronouns keep sentences short and clear: 我 wǒ, 你 nǐ, 他 tā, 她 tā, 我们 wǒmen, 你们 nǐmen, 他们 tāmen. Notice that and sound the same, so context matters.

Sentence drill: master subject + verb + object: 我吃米饭 (I eat rice). Add particles: 了 for completed action, 吗 for questions, 在 for location or ongoing action.

Example

Build a sentence with a conjunction: 我从学校回家,因为今天没有考试。 Wǒ cóng xuéxiào huí jiā, yīnwèi jīntiān méiyǒu kǎoshì. I go home from school because there is no exam today.

Add 了 for completed actions: 我喝了茶,也写了作业。 Wǒ hē le chá, yě xiě le zuòyè. I drank tea and also did my homework.

Worked example: 我吃了米饭 (I ate rice) vs 我吃米饭吗?(Do I eat rice?)

Lesson 5 Review and Matching Strategy

Review is where vocabulary becomes durable. Use spaced repetition: meet a new word, then review it after one day, three days, and seven days, with longer gaps once you answer correctly.

Keep an error log from your practice sets. For every missed question, write the word, the answer you chose, the correct answer, and one reason the mistake happened, such as confusing two tones or two characters.

Matching practice is ideal for HSK 2. Match pinyin to characters, characters to meanings, and Chinese words to English words. The matching questions in this bank train exactly those quick recognition paths.

Build a mock-test plan around the 163 questions in the bank. Start with one short set of 20 to 30 questions, time yourself, and then review every error before the next set.

Check four skills for each word: recognize the character, say the pinyin with the right tone, recall the meaning, and use it in a short sentence. A word is learned when all four work.

Finish by combining categories: make a short story with numbers, time, family, food, places, and verbs. Stories force you to retrieve words in context instead of as isolated items.

Error log drill: after each practice, record the word, your answer, the correct answer, and the reason for the mistake. Review after one, three, and seven days, and use matching exercises to connect pinyin with characters.

Example

Try a 15-minute review loop: 5 minutes of flashcards, 5 minutes of matching practice, and 5 minutes of error review. Then take a short mock set and mark every mistake.

Practice sentence recall: see 常常 chángcháng, then say 我常常喝茶。 Wǒ chángcháng hē chá. I often drink tea.

Worked example: If you confused 买 mǎi and 卖 mài, write both with meanings and use each in a sentence.
