Lesson 1 HSK 3 Exam Format and Study Strategy

HSK 3 is an intermediate Chinese exam that measures your ability to handle everyday situations in Chinese life. The test combines listening comprehension and reading comprehension, and it expects you to know about 600 words together with frequent grammar patterns. This course prepares you with 5 lessons and a bank of 80 original questions that follow the real exam style and cover grammar, daily life, health, work, study, travel, culture, and matching tasks.

The listening section presents short dialogues and notices with questions that you hear only once. You need to catch concrete details such as time, place, price, or the relationship between speakers. Before the audio begins, read the options and predict what information you need; in the bank you will find 听力 (tīnglì) exercises in this same format.

The reading section includes gap-fill sentences and sentence ordering tasks, and it tests vocabulary, measure words, and grammar in context. The 阅读 (yuèdú) practice teaches you to read the whole sentence before choosing and to check that your answer keeps the normal word order. When you hesitate between two options, remove the one that breaks the sentence structure.

Time management is part of the strategy. In the mock exam, spend about 75 minutes on the 80 questions and do not stop for more than one minute on a single question; mark uncertain items, move forward, and return at the end if time remains. This trains you under the same pressure as the real exam and helps you decide quickly.

Start with a diagnostic test: complete a first block of 20 mixed questions and record which topics you miss. Note whether the error comes from vocabulary, grammar, listening, or reading, because each type needs a different remedy. That record becomes your study map for the next weeks.

Build a realistic weekly plan: study 15 to 20 minutes each day, alternate a new lesson with error review, and save the full mock exam for the end. For example, week one covers format and grammar, week two covers daily life, work, and culture, and the final week includes the mock exam and its review. Daily consistency matters more than one long session.

Section plan: HSK 3 combines listening and reading with about 80 questions. Answer listening in order, mark difficult reading questions, and keep a steady pace. Use the mock bank as a full timed test.

Example

Error log: 把 + object with reversed order. Correction: 他把作业写完了。 (tā bǎ zuòyè xiě wán le) means "He finished his homework."

Spaced review: repeat this error after 24 hours, 3 days, and 7 days, then redo 10 failed questions from the bank.

Worked example: If the mock exam takes 75 minutes, divide time between listening and reading and keep 5 minutes to check.

Lesson 2 HSK 3 Key Grammar Patterns

This lesson focuses on the grammar patterns that appear most often at HSK 3: , , 除了...以外, 越来越, 一边...一边..., 不但...而且..., and result complements. These patterns control word order and meaning, so they are ideal targets for both grammar review and mock exam questions.

A sentence moves a definite object before the verb and shows how the action affects it: 我把作业写完了 (wǒ bǎ zuòyè xiě wán le) means "I finished my homework." Use 把 when the object is clear and the result is important.

The passive marker focuses on the receiver of an action: 手机被弟弟摔坏了 (shǒujī bèi dìdi shuāi huài le) means "The phone was broken by my younger brother." Notice that 被 is followed by the doer, and the verb often ends with a result complement.

除了...以外 introduces an exception or an additional item: 除了咖啡以外,她只喝水 (chúle kāfēi yǐwài, tā zhǐ hē shuǐ) means "Apart from coffee, she only drinks water." In HSK 3 you will also see 除了...以外,还... to add another element.

越来越 describes change, while 一边...一边... describes two actions at the same time and 不但...而且... adds a stronger point. These patterns are common in daily conversation and in listening texts, so practice recognizing them quickly.

Result complements such as 做完 (zuò wán), 听懂 (tīng dǒng), and 找到 (zhǎo dào) show the outcome of an action. They often appear with 把 and 被 sentences, so check the verb and its complement together when you choose an answer.

Pattern drill: master 把, 被, 除了...以外, 越来越, 一边...一边..., 不但...而且..., and result complements. Write one original sentence for each and check word order.

Example

Build the sentence: correct order for is 我把那本书看完了。 (wǒ bǎ nà běn shū kàn wán le) "I finished reading that book."

Transform to passive: 那本书被我看完了。 (nà běn shū bèi wǒ kàn wán le) "That book was finished by me." Use both forms in your review notes.

Worked example: 他把作业做完了 (He finished the homework) puts the object before the verb with 把.

Lesson 3 HSK 3 Daily Life, Shopping, and Health

Daily life is the most practical part of HSK 3 because it appears in listening dialogues, reading passages, and the mock exam. This lesson focuses on shopping, prices, health, and appointments, the situations you will meet most often.

When shopping, you need phrases such as 多少钱 (duōshao qián, "how much"), 太贵了 (tài guì le, "too expensive"), and 便宜一点儿 (piányi yīdiǎnr, "a little cheaper"). Measure words like 件 (jiàn), 双 (shuāng), and 个 (gè) make your answer grammatically correct.

For health conversations, learn to describe symptoms: 头疼 (tóu téng), 发烧 (fā shāo), 咳嗽 (késou), and 不舒服 (bù shūfu). A doctor may ask 哪儿不舒服?(nǎr bù shūfu?) "Where do you feel unwell?" and you should give a short, clear answer.

Appointments and polite requests also matter: 请问 (qǐngwèn, "excuse me"), 麻烦 (máfan, "to trouble"), 谢谢 (xièxie, "thank you"), and 没关系 (méi guānxi, "it is okay"). These words appear constantly in the test and in real life.

Combine the patterns from the previous lesson in real contexts: 除了...以外 for choices and 越来越 for changes. For example, you can say 除了苹果以外,我也喜欢香蕉 (chúle píngguǒ yǐwài, wǒ yě xǐhuan xiāngjiāo) "Besides apples, I also like bananas."

Use the linked question bank to practice each scene: read the question, identify the situation, and then check the explanation. The more you connect grammar to daily life, the faster you will answer in the mock exam.

Scene drill: practice shopping, prices, health, and appointments: 多少钱, 太贵了, 便宜一点, 挂号, 预约. Use dialogues to connect vocabulary with real situations.

Example

Dialogue practice: 这件衣服多少钱? (zhè jiàn yīfu duōshao qián?) "How much is this piece of clothing?" 太贵了,能便宜一点儿吗? (tài guì le, néng piányi yīdiǎnr ma?) "It is too expensive. Can it be a little cheaper?"

Health reply: 我头疼,还咳嗽。 (wǒ tóu téng, hái késou) "I have a headache and I am also coughing."

Worked example: 这个苹果多少钱?(How much are these apples?) 三块五一斤。(Three yuan fifty per jin.)

Lesson 4 HSK 3 Work, Study, Travel, and Culture

HSK 3 also tests communication in work, study, travel, and culture. These topics connect vocabulary with real situations, and they appear in both listening and reading sections.

At work, learn words such as 请假 (qǐngjià, "to ask for leave"), 开会 (kāihuì, "to have a meeting"), 加班 (jiābān, "to work overtime"), and 同事 (tóngshì, "colleague"). You can describe schedules, requests, and simple tasks with these words.

For study, use 上课 (shàngkè), 复习 (fùxí), 考试 (kǎoshì), and 图书馆 (túshūguǎn). The pattern 一边...一边... is useful here: 他一边工作,一边学中文 (tā yībiān gōngzuò, yībiān xué zhōngwén) means "He works and studies Chinese at the same time."

Travel and transport vocabulary includes 火车站 (huǒchēzhàn), 飞机场 (fēijīchǎng), 地铁 (dìtiě), and 票 (piào). Practice asking about departure times, arrival times, and ticket prices so you can answer quickly in listening tasks.

Culture gives context to the language: 春节 (Chūnjié), 月饼 (yuèbǐng), 习惯 (xíguàn), and 文化 (wénhuà). You can use 不但...而且... to describe customs: 春节不但热闹,而且家人会团聚 (Chūnjié búdàn rènao, érqiě jiārén huì tuánjù) "Spring Festival is not only lively, but family members also gather together."

When you meet these topics in the bank, first name the situation, then find the words that fit the context. This habit improves both reading speed and listening accuracy.

Topic drill: learn work words 请假, 开会, 加班, 同事; study words 作业, 考试, 复习; travel words 火车, 飞机, 旅馆; culture words 节日, 习惯. Use each in a sentence.

Example

Work and study: 他一边工作,一边学中文。 (tā yībiān gōngzuò, yībiān xué zhōngwén) "He works and studies Chinese at the same time."

Culture: 春节不但热闹,而且家人会团聚。 (Chūnjié búdàn rènao, érqiě jiārén huì tuánjù) "Spring Festival is not only lively, but family members also gather together."

Worked example: 明天要开会,我今天需要加班。(There is a meeting tomorrow, so I need to work late today.)

Lesson 5 HSK 3 Mock Test Review and Error Analysis

The final lesson turns preparation into a complete mock exam review. You will use the 80-question bank as a real test, then analyze mistakes with a clear review routine.

First, complete the exam in one sitting: 80 questions in about 75 minutes. Follow the listening and reading order, mark uncertain answers, and do not stop to check your phone or notes. Simulating the real conditions gives you reliable feedback.

After the exam, classify every mistake into one of four categories: vocabulary, grammar, listening, or reading. Write one line for each error, such as a 把 sentence with reversed order or a missed result complement.

Use spaced review: return to your errors after 24 hours, then after 3 days, and then after 7 days. In each session, redo 10 to 15 questions that you missed before trying new material. This rhythm builds long-term memory and avoids the illusion that knowing an answer means being able to answer.

One week before the exam, repeat the full mock and compare your score with the initial diagnosis. The goal is not a perfect improvement but a steady one. On the day before the test, only review your error list and do a short warm-up, because rest is part of the strategy.

Use this same routine for the next bank: diagnose, practice, classify, and review. A repeatable method is more valuable than any single lesson.

Error loop: take the 80-question mock under real conditions, mark uncertain answers, then review by grammar, vocabulary, and listening. Redo each wrong question after a gap.

Example

Error log: passive marker missed. Correction: 我的手机被朋友借走了。 (wǒ de shǒujī bèi péngyou jiè zǒu le) "My phone was borrowed by my friend."

Next review: redo this error after 24 hours, then complete 10 failed listening and reading questions.

Worked example: If you missed several 把-sentences, review the pattern and answer five more questions on it.
