Lesson 1 Core HSK 4 Vocabulary: Life and Study

HSK 4 moves beyond everyday survival phrases into work, study, habits, and abstract ideas. These words appear constantly in reading and listening tasks, so learn them with collocations rather than as isolated items.

  • 环境 (huánjìng) environment - 保护环境 to protect the environment
  • 安排 (ānpái) arrange - 安排时间 to arrange time
  • 完成 (wánchéng) complete - 完成任务 to complete a task
  • 习惯 (xíguàn) habit - 养成习惯 to form a habit
  • 经验 (jīngyàn) experience - 积累经验 to gain experience
  • 准备 (zhǔnbèi) prepare - 做好准备 to be prepared

Practice by making one sentence for each word about your own routine, such as 我每天安排时间复习汉语. This connects the word to personal meaning and helps you remember it longer.

Collocation drill: practise each noun with the verb that naturally pairs with it. For example, 保护环境 (protect the environment), 安排时间 (arrange time), 完成任务 (complete a task), and 养成习惯 (form a habit). Write one sentence using each pair and say it aloud with correct tones.

Example

我每天安排一小时学习,慢慢养成了复习的习惯。

I arrange one hour of study every day and slowly formed a review habit.

Worked example: Learn 经验 (jīngyàn, experience) with 积累 (accumulate): 我积累了丰富的工作经验 (I have accumulated rich work experience).

Then use the noun in a question: 你有教学经验吗?(Do you have teaching experience?)

Lesson 2 Verb Patterns and Result Complements

Many HSK 4 verbs form strong collocations: 解决问题 (solve a problem), 完成任务 (complete a task), 提高成绩 (improve grades), and 发展经济 (develop the economy). Learn each verb with its most common object so the pair sounds natural together.

Result complements add the outcome of an action. 完 means finished, 好 means done well, 到 means reached, and 成 means succeeded. For example, 做完 means finish doing, 写好 means write well, 看到 means see, and 办成 means manage to do.

The 把 sentence is very common at HSK 4: Subject + 把 + object + verb + complement. For example, 他把房间打扫得很干净 means "He cleaned the room very clean."

Result complement drill: memorise the pattern verb + complement: 做完 (finish doing), 写好 (write well), 看到 (see), 办成 (manage to do). Notice how the complement changes the meaning and always appears right after the verb.

Example

他把这个问题解决了。

He solved this problem.

Worked example: 作业太多了,我还没做完。(The homework is too much; I have not finished it yet.)

The complement 完 shows the action is completed; 还没 makes it negative.

Lesson 3 Adverbs and Sentence Connectors

HSK 4 uses adverbs and connectors to express time, contrast, condition, and reason. 终于 (finally), 一直 (all along), 已经 (already), and 马上 (soon) add precision to your sentences.

  • 虽然……但是…… although... but...
  • 因为……所以…… because... so...
  • 只要……就…… as long as... then...
  • 越来越…… more and more...
  • 一边……一边…… do two things at the same time

Connectors link ideas and are frequent in listening tasks. When you hear 虽然, expect a contrast after 但是. When you hear 因为, the reason comes first and the result often follows 所以.

Connector listening drill: when you hear 虽然 (although), expect a contrast; when you hear 因为 (because), expect a reason. Practise completing the second half of the sentence: 虽然下雨了,但是…… (Although it rained, ...).

Example

虽然工作很忙,但是他一直坚持学习。

Although work is busy, he has kept studying all along.

Worked example: 虽然很累,但是我坚持完成了练习。(Although I was tired, I kept going and finished the exercise.)

The pair 虽然……但是…… signals the contrast clearly.

Lesson 4 Sentence Structures and Measure Words

Longer HSK 4 sentences often use structures that connect two pieces of information:

  • 除了……以外,还/都…… besides... also/all...
  • 不但……而且…… not only... but also...
  • 把/被 sentences for active and passive meaning

Measure words also need attention: 件 for matters and clothes, 次 for times, 遍 for repeated actions, 套 for sets, and 种 for kinds. For example, 这件事、三次考试、读一遍、一套教材、一种方法.

When you meet a new sentence, mark the structure and rewrite it with your own details. This turns grammar knowledge into active production.

Structure comparison: 除了……以外,还/都…… adds or excludes; 不但……而且…… adds a stronger second point; 把 sentences focus on the result of an action; 被 sentences focus on the receiver. Practise rewriting the same idea in both 把 and 被 forms.

Example

除了复习生词以外,他还每天做语法练习。

Besides reviewing vocabulary, he also does grammar exercises every day.

Worked example: 他把作业做完了。-> 作业被他做完了。(He finished the homework. -> The homework was finished by him.)

Lesson 5 Review Strategy and Exam Skills

HSK 4 questions test speed as much as knowledge. A short daily routine is more effective than a long session before the exam.

  • Use topic filters to review 环境, 工作, and 学习 vocabulary in context
  • Do the daily 5-question challenge first thing
  • Save wrong answers and review them before adding new questions
  • Use random 10 and mock exam modes to build timing
  • Read every explanation, even for correct answers

In the linked HSK 4 bank, each attempt saves your streak, favorites, wrong answers, and daily progress in your browser, so you can continue exactly where you stopped.

Speed routine: use the topic filters to review the vocabulary areas you missed most, then take a timed 10-question set. After each set, write down the exact word or structure you did not recognise and add it to your review list.

Example

每天先做 5 道每日挑战,再用“错题”模式复习。

Do 5 daily challenge questions first, then review with wrong-answers mode.

Worked example: If you missed a 把-sentence, review the pattern, write two original sentences, and answer five questions about 把-sentences before moving on.
