- Can set aside 45 to 90 minutes of study time most days.
Lesson 1 HSK 5 Test Format and Study Strategy
The HSK 5 test checks whether you can understand Chinese used in news, academic writing, business, and everyday public contexts. It includes listening, reading, and writing sections. The reading section uses longer passages that require you to identify main ideas, details, implied meaning, and the writer attitude. The writing section asks you to combine given words or complete short compositions with clear organization.
Manage your time by finishing easier listening items first, then reading questions in order. For writing, leave five minutes to check grammar and character mistakes. Read Chinese news, essays, and stories every day so that advanced vocabulary becomes familiar in context.
- Set a weekly plan with listening, reading, vocabulary, and writing practice.
- Use past papers to learn common question types and timing.
- Keep a notebook of idioms and grammar patterns for review before mock tests.
Time budget: divide the exam by sections and keep a small buffer. Answer listening questions in order, mark difficult reading questions, and reserve enough time for writing. Finish each part before moving on so answer transfer stays accurate.
Example
In reading, a common task asks for the main idea. If the passage begins with 随着社会的发展,人们越来越重视健康 and later gives examples of exercise and diet, the main idea is that healthy habits are becoming more important.
Worked example: If listening takes 30 minutes and reading 45, leave 25 minutes for writing and 5 minutes to check.
Lesson 2 HSK 5 Core Vocabulary
HSK 5 vocabulary covers abstract topics: society (社会, 制度), economy (经济, 效率), science (科技, 研究), culture (传统, 文明), environment (环境, 生态), and health (健康, 医疗).
Learn words with collocations: 提高效率, 解决问题, 承担责任, 达成一致. Idioms are also tested, such as 半途而废 (give up halfway), 一举两得 (achieve two things at once), and 聚精会神 (concentrate fully). Review words by topic and write one sentence for each new item.
- Group words by theme and review after one, three, seven, and fourteen days.
- Make collocation cards instead of memorizing isolated words.
- Read articles and underline advanced words you meet.
Abstract word drill: learn each topic word with a collocation and a sentence: 提高效率 (improve efficiency), 解决问题 (solve problems), 承担责任 (take responsibility). Review by topic and use the bank filters to target society, economy, science, culture, environment, and health words.
Example
Build topic vocabulary from a base word. From 发展 you can learn 发展经济, 社会发展, and 不断发展. Example: 随着科技的发展,人们的生活水平不断提高。
Worked example: Learn 责任 (responsibility) with 承担: 我们要承担责任 (We must take responsibility).
Lesson 3 HSK 5 Essential Grammar
HSK 5 grammar moves from simple sentences to formal patterns that express condition, contrast, reason, choice, and progression.
无论……都……no matter what, the result stays the same既然……就……since a fact is known, then...与其……不如……rather than A, it is better to B宁可……也……would rather A than B之所以……是因为……the reason is because...不但……而且……not only... but also...
These patterns often appear in listening and reading. When you hear 虽然 or 尽管, expect a contrast later. When you hear 之所以, the reason usually follows with 是因为.
Pattern comparison: 无论……都…… means the result holds in every case; 既然……就…… draws a conclusion from a known fact; 与其……不如…… prefers one option; 宁可……也…… accepts a cost to achieve a goal. Write one original sentence for each pattern.
Example
与其在家浪费时间,不如出去锻炼身体。This means it is better to go out and exercise than to waste time at home.
Worked example: 既然你决定了,就坚持下去。(Since you have decided, keep going.)
Lesson 4 HSK 5 Reading and Writing
HSK 5 reading passages are longer and more abstract. Read the first sentence of each paragraph to find the topic, then look for clue words such as 但是, 因此, and 例如. Answer detail questions by returning to the text instead of relying on memory.
For writing, plan briefly before you start. State your main idea in the first sentence, support it with two or three reasons or examples, and finish with a short conclusion. Use advanced patterns naturally, such as 随着…… and 不仅……而且……, but do not force too many idioms into one sentence.
- Practice summarizing each paragraph in one sentence.
- Write short essays about study, work, environment, or health.
- Check characters, measure words, and sentence endings before submitting.
Paragraph topic drill: read the first sentence of each paragraph to map the structure, then underline clue words such as 但是 (but), 因此 (therefore), and 例如 (for example). In writing, state the main idea first, support it with two reasons or examples, and end with one summary sentence.
Example
A good writing opening: 随着社会的发展,人们的健康意识不断提高,越来越多的人开始坚持锻炼。The topic is clear and the pattern 随着 introduces the context.
Worked example: Paragraph one gives background, paragraph two states the problem, and paragraph three proposes a solution. Use the first sentences as a map.
Lesson 5 HSK 5 Eight-Week Practice Plan
An eight-week plan builds steady progress. Weeks 1-2 review advanced vocabulary, idioms, and grammar; Weeks 3-4 practice timed listening and reading; Weeks 5-6 focus on difficult passages and writing tasks; Weeks 7-8 use full mock tests and review every mistake.
Use spaced review: review after one day, three days, one week, and two weeks. Keep an error notebook with the correct answer, the reason for the mistake, and one example sentence. Take one complete mock test each week and study the explanation for every wrong question.
- Study 45-90 minutes most days.
- Simulate real exam timing in the final two weeks.
- Continue monthly mock tests after the plan to maintain your level.
Spaced review: schedule reviews one day, three days, one week, and two weeks after learning new material. Keep an error log with the correct answer, the reason for the mistake, and one example sentence; review it before each mock exam.
Example
Make review measurable. In the notebook write: 每天复习20个新词,周末做一套模拟题。This means review 20 new words daily and take one mock test at the weekend.
Worked example: After week 3, review errors from weeks 1-2 before starting new passages.
