Lesson 1 ISEE Overview and Test Strategy

The ISEE is used by independent schools to evaluate applicants. It has four scored multiple-choice sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, and Mathematics Achievement. The essay is unscored but sent to schools. Scaled scores range from 760 to 940 per section. Unlike the SSAT, the ISEE does not penalize wrong answers, so you should answer every question. Manage time by moving past hard questions and returning later. Bring your admission ticket and approved identification on test day. Regular timed practice builds accuracy and confidence. This course follows the ISEE structure and links to a practice bank with 60 original questions.

Lesson 2 Verbal Reasoning and Vocabulary

The ISEE Verbal Reasoning section tests synonyms and sentence completion. Synonyms are words with similar meanings, such as bright and shiny. Sentence completion asks you to choose the word that fits the context. Build vocabulary by learning roots, prefixes, and suffixes, and keep a personal word list with example sentences. When you meet an unknown word, use context clues and word parts. Review words with spaced repetition so they stay in long-term memory. Read widely to see vocabulary in natural sentences. Practice both meaning and context, because the ISEE tests how words are used.

Lesson 3 Quantitative Reasoning

The ISEE Quantitative Reasoning section tests problem solving with math concepts. It includes percents, averages, medians, patterns, exponents, and comparisons. Averages are sums divided by counts, and the median is the middle value in ordered data. Percents can be converted to decimals before multiplying. Patterns often use repeated differences or ratios. Compare fractions by converting them to a common denominator. Practice word problems by identifying given values and the unknown. Use mental math and estimation to save time. Lesson 4 Reading Comprehension

The ISEE Reading Comprehension section asks about passages from science, history, literature, and social studies. Read for the main idea, author purpose, and tone. Note how paragraphs connect and where evidence supports each point. Answer using the passage, not outside knowledge. Inferences must be supported by the text. Transition words such as therefore and however signal conclusions and contrast. Topic sentences introduce paragraph ideas, and conclusions bring main points together. Practice with varied passages to build speed. After each set, review the evidence behind every correct answer.

Lesson 5 Mathematics Achievement and Practice

The ISEE Mathematics Achievement section tests computation and math skills, including equations, geometry, measurement, and data. Know formulas for area, perimeter, circumference, volume, and the Pythagorean theorem. Solve equations by isolating the variable. A rectangular prism volume is length times width times height. The area of a triangle is half base times height. The area of a trapezoid is the average of the bases times the height. Practice with timed sets and review every mistake. Track which skills lose the most points and drill them first. On test day, arrive early, bring your ticket and ID, and answer every question because the ISEE has no wrong-answer penalty.
