Lesson 1 JLPT N1 Test Format and Study Strategy
The JLPT N1 test is the highest level and evaluates the ability to understand Japanese used in a wide range of contexts, including news, academic writing, business, and literature. It has two major sections: 言語知識・読解 (language knowledge and reading) and 聴解 (listening). Language knowledge covers advanced vocabulary, grammar, and kanji; reading includes longer passages with abstract arguments, implied meaning, and complex sentence structure.
A balanced score across all sections is required to pass. Manage time carefully by finishing vocabulary and grammar first, then reading deeply. Listen to news, lectures, and interviews daily to build advanced listening skills.
- Create a weekly study schedule with review days.
- Use past papers to learn question patterns and timing.
- Record difficult expressions and review them before mock tests.
Advanced passage plan: in reading, skim the abstract or first paragraph to identify the theme, mark opinion and evidence, and answer questions in order. In listening, predict from options and confirm with key expressions; keep time for longer passages.
Example
A typical task asks for the correct reading or meaning in context. In この法案は国会で可決された。 ("This bill was approved by the Diet."), 可決 is read かけつ, and 国会 is read こっかい.
Worked example: Before a long passage, read the first paragraph and the final sentence to guess the conclusion.
Lesson 2 JLPT N1 Core Vocabulary
N1 vocabulary includes advanced abstract themes: politics (政策, 国会), economy (投資, 株価), law (判決, 証拠), science (仮説, 検証), culture (伝統, 芸術), and social issues (少子高齢化, 地球温暖化).
Learn word families and formal affixes. The prefix 不 adds negation (可能 → 不可能), and suffixes such as 〜性, 〜化, and 〜的 form abstract nouns and adjectives. Review words in context, including news and opinion articles.
- Group words by theme and review after one, three, seven, and fourteen days.
- Write one example sentence for each new word.
- Study kanji compounds that share a common root.
Formal vocabulary drill: learn advanced words by theme with collocations: 政策を実施する (implement a policy), 証拠を提出する (submit evidence), 仮説を検証する (test a hypothesis). Use the bank filters to focus on politics, economy, law, science, culture, and social issues.
Example
Build word families from a familiar base. From 破る you get 破棄 (annulment) and 破壊 (destruction). Example: 契約を破棄する決定は、会社の将来に影響を与えた。 This means "The decision to annul the contract affected the future of the company."
Worked example: 政策を実施する (implement a policy) is a natural collocation; 実施 without する is incomplete in a sentence.
Lesson 3 JLPT N1 Essential Grammar
N1 grammar is often used in formal writing and complex speech. 〜ざるをえない means having no choice; 〜ずにはいられない means cannot help doing; 〜までもない means there is no need to go as far as; 〜べく expresses purpose; and 〜に足る means worthy of.
Other important patterns include 〜をものともせず (without being deterred), 〜をよそに (ignoring), 〜を皮切りに (starting with), 〜と同時に (at the same time), 〜以上は (now that), and 〜たまもの (the result of).
- Learn each pattern with one clear sentence.
- Compare similar patterns to avoid confusion.
- Use the patterns in your own writing and speaking.
Nuance pair drill: 〜ざるをえない and 〜ずにはいられない both express lack of choice but differ: the first is obligation, the second is involuntary emotion. Compare 〜までもない (unnecessary) and 〜に足る (worthy of), then write sentences that make the difference clear.
Example
Notice how one pattern changes the nuance. 笑わずにはいられなかった。 means "I could not help laughing." In contrast, 説明するまでもない。 means "There is no need to explain."
Worked example: 説明するまでもない (There is no need to explain) vs 説明するに足る内容 (content worthy of explanation).
Lesson 4 JLPT N1 Kanji and Reading Skills
N1 requires about 2000 kanji and the ability to read advanced compounds and rare readings. Master both on readings and kun readings, and note how the same character changes in compounds. For example, 破 appears in 破棄 (annulment) and 破れる (to break).
For long passages, identify the overall structure first, then find the main claim, supporting evidence, and the author tone. Contrast markers such as しかし, 一方, and むしろ often signal the key idea.
- Read newspapers, editorials, and essays for 20 minutes daily.
- Keep a kanji notebook with readings, compounds, and example sentences.
- Practice skimming for structure before reading every detail.
Rare reading drill: for advanced kanji, record compounds and rare readings, such as 破棄 (haki) and 破れる (yabureru). In long passages, mark contrast markers and summarize each paragraph in one sentence before answering.
Example
Connect readings through compounds. 破 is read は in 破棄 but やぶ in 破れる. Example: 古い建物の撤去が決まった。 "The removal of the old building was decided."
Worked example: 破棄 (haki) keeps the on reading, while 破れる (yabureru) uses a kun reading.
Lesson 5 JLPT N1 Eight-Week Practice Plan
An eight-week plan builds steady progress. Weeks 1-2 review advanced vocabulary, grammar, and kanji; Weeks 3-4 practice timed reading and listening; Weeks 5-6 focus on difficult passages and error analysis; Weeks 7-8 use full mock tests and exam simulation.
Use spaced review: review material after one day, three days, one week, and two weeks. Keep an error notebook with the correct answer, the reason for the mistake, and one example sentence. Take one full mock test each week and review every wrong answer.
- Study 45-90 minutes most days.
- Simulate real exam conditions in the final two weeks.
- After the plan, keep monthly mock tests to maintain level.
Eight-week rhythm: weeks 1-2 review advanced vocabulary, grammar, and kanji; weeks 3-4 timed reading and listening; weeks 5-6 difficult passages and errors; weeks 7-8 full mock tests. Review after one, three, seven, and fourteen days.
Example
Make review measurable. In the error notebook, write 復習:毎日45分、読解と聴解を中心に練習します。 This means "Review: I practice reading and listening for 45 minutes every day." Link each entry to the mock-test question that caused the error.
Worked example: In week 6, classify errors by grammar, kanji, and reading, then target the largest group in week 7.
