Inferences are supported by text evidence but go beyond exact words. Direct facts and personal opinions are different.

Tone is the author attitude, such as serious or playful. Structure and formatting are not tone.

Reading for the main idea and structure helps you answer questions quickly. Counting or memorizing is not useful.

A topic sentence introduces the main idea of a paragraph. It is not necessarily the last sentence or a question.

A conclusion summarizes or resolves the main points. It does not introduce unrelated details.

Transitions such as however and therefore connect ideas. Nouns, verbs, and punctuation are different.
