Lesson 1 GMAT Exam Structure, Scoring, and Study Strategy

The current GMAT Focus exam is built around three separately timed sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. Quantitative Reasoning contains 21 questions and lasts 45 minutes, Verbal Reasoning contains 23 questions and lasts 45 minutes, and Data Insights contains 20 questions and lasts 45 minutes.

The total score ranges from 205 to 805 and is reported in 10-point increments, so even a small improvement in one section can move the total. This is why targeted preparation matters more than studying every topic with equal effort.

Before you begin, take a timed diagnostic under realistic conditions. The results reveal which question types deserve attention: you might be strong at problem solving but slow on data sufficiency, or accurate at sentence correction but rushed on critical reasoning.

Use the results to set a target that is ambitious but reachable, then build a weekly plan that balances skill building with timed practice. A productive week might include two timed sections, one focused review session, and short daily drills on foundational math and vocabulary.

Timed practice is essential because pacing is a real constraint on the GMAT Focus exam. After each set, review every question, not just the ones you missed, and write down the reasoning pattern behind the correct answer.

Finally, protect your consistency: track your error types, revisit your mistake log every week, and take one shorter practice session before test day to stay sharp without exhausting yourself.

Section plan: divide study time by your weakest section while keeping all three fresh. Take one diagnostic first, then do timed sets weekly: quant, verbal, and data insights. Review every error by type and redo the question after a gap.

Example

A candidate earns 585 on a diagnostic, sets a 655 target, and schedules two timed sections plus one error-review session each week to close the 70-point gap.

Worked example: If Data Insights is lowest, spend three days per week on that section and one timed set each for quant and verbal.

Lesson 2 GMAT Quantitative Problem Solving

GMAT quantitative problem solving draws on a compact set of topics: arithmetic, algebra, word problems, ratios, percentages, and basic geometry. You will rarely see advanced calculus or statistics, so a solid command of fundamentals is more valuable than memorizing obscure formulas.

The most reliable first step is to translate the situation into mathematics. Identify the unknown, define a variable, and write the relationship as an equation or proportion, then check that your units and labels make sense before doing any heavy calculation.

When an algebraic route becomes slow, switch tools. Testing numbers works well when a rule must hold for all values, back-solving lets you plug answer choices into the question, and estimation can eliminate choices that are clearly too large or too small.

Many careless errors happen not during computation but at the final step. Read the exact wording of the question and confirm what is being asked: the value of x, the sum of x + y, or a ratio written in a particular form.

Build accuracy with timed sets of 15 to 20 questions and keep a mistake log organized by topic. When you review, ask whether the error came from a concept gap, a misread, or a pacing problem, and adjust your next practice session accordingly.

Setup first: translate the situation into variables and equations before calculating. Check units, use estimation to eliminate choices, and re-read the final question to avoid answering for the wrong value.

Example

If a question asks for the value of x + y after providing two equations, solve the system efficiently, then confirm that the requested sum is what the answer reports rather than stopping at the value of x.

Worked example: If x is 20% of 150, then 0.20 x 150 = 30; confirm the question asks for x, not 150 - x.

Lesson 3 Data Sufficiency and Data Insights

Data Sufficiency is a distinctive GMAT question type in which a question is followed by two numbered statements. Your task is not to produce an answer but to decide whether the statements provide enough information to answer the question.

The five answer choices have a fixed meaning: statement 1 alone is sufficient but not statement 2; statement 2 alone is sufficient but not statement 1; both statements together are sufficient but neither alone is; each statement alone is sufficient; or even the two statements together are insufficient.

Before you calculate, ask whether an exact value is actually necessary. A question about the product of two numbers may be answered by knowing their values directly, but a question about whether one number is greater than another can often be answered from ranges or inequalities alone.

The Data Insights section also includes graphics interpretation, table analysis, multi-source reasoning, and two-part analysis. These questions test your ability to read charts, compare data sets, synthesize information from several tabs, and connect two related choices.

Because data-heavy questions consume time quickly, set a personal time limit per question and move on when a statement analysis is clear. Overthinking is a common trap: if one statement is obviously sufficient or insufficient, record the answer and reserve your energy for the next question.

Answer grid drill: memorize the five fixed options. Test statement 1 alone, then statement 2 alone, then both together. Do not calculate the exact value unless needed; just decide sufficiency.

Example

If statement 1 says that the sum of two numbers is 10 and the question asks for their product, the statement alone is insufficient because many different pairs satisfy the same sum.

Worked example: If statement 1 gives one value and statement 2 gives another, both are sufficient separately; choose D.

Lesson 4 Critical Reasoning and Reading

Every critical reasoning argument can be broken into a few moving parts: premises provide evidence, the conclusion is the claim the author wants you to accept, and assumptions are unstated links that must hold for the evidence to support the conclusion.

GMAT arguments come in predictable task types: weaken the conclusion, strengthen it, identify an assumption, draw an inference, or evaluate which evidence would help decide the argument's strength. Naming the task before you read the answer choices changes how you filter them.

Reading passages requires the same disciplined attention. Identify the main idea, notice the author's attitude, map the structure of the passage, and paraphrase each paragraph in one sentence before moving on.

Most wrong answers fail for one of three reasons: they are too extreme, they are irrelevant to the argument's scope, or they import information the passage never discusses. Test each option against the exact claim rather than against a general feeling about the topic.

Practice with the linked question bank, and after every set, classify each wrong answer by task type and by error pattern. Over time, you will notice that your mistakes cluster in a small number of argument structures, which makes further review much more efficient.

Argument map: find the conclusion first, then the premises, and identify the unstated assumption. For weaken questions, attack the assumption; for strengthen questions, support the weakest link.

Example

If an argument concludes that a new policy will reduce costs because it lowers labor hours, the conclusion depends on the assumption that labor hours are the main driver of costs.

Worked example: If the conclusion is that the new policy will raise sales, the assumption is that customers will respond positively.

Lesson 5 Sentence Correction and Test Day Strategy

Sentence Correction questions test grammar, meaning, clarity, and conciseness in written English. A correct answer must be grammatical, but it must also preserve the intended meaning and read naturally in context.

The most heavily tested rules include subject-verb agreement, parallelism, modifier placement, pronoun reference, and verb tense. Learn each rule through examples rather than memorizing long lists of exceptions.

Read the original sentence for meaning first, then compare the answer choices in pairs. Eliminate any option that changes the timing, the subject, or the logical relationship expressed by the original sentence, even if the option sounds grammatical.

On test day, start each section with a short routine: confirm that the on-screen calculator is available, set your pace by checking the question counter, and commit to answering every question because unanswered questions cost more than a reasonable guess.

After practice, keep a post-practice review routine that records each mistake by question type and topic. A few minutes of structured review after every set will improve your Sentence Correction score more than simply doing more questions.

Error checklist: check subject-verb agreement, parallelism, pronoun reference, modifiers, tense, and conciseness. Read the whole sentence with each option, and choose the clearest option that preserves meaning.

Example

In a sentence about a company whose profits increased, an answer choice that shifts the timing or the subject should be eliminated even if it sounds grammatical, because it changes the intended meaning.

Worked example: "The list of requirements are long" is wrong because the singular subject list takes is.
